Civil Litigation Defense Associate – Edwardsville, Illinois

Lashly & Baer, P.C. is looking for a motivated attorney with 1–3 years of civil litigation experience to join our Litigation Practice Group in our Edwardsville, Illinois office.

This is a great opportunity for an attorney who wants to build a career in litigation and gain meaningful, hands-on experience. Our associates work closely with experienced attorneys and are involved in all stages of a case—from developing strategy and conducting discovery to preparing for depositions, hearings, mediations, and trial.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing litigation strategies and preparing cases for trial
  • Conducting fact and expert discovery
  • Drafting pleadings, motions, correspondence, and other legal documents
  • Communicating with clients and providing practical legal guidance
  • Preparing for and participating in depositions, hearings, mediations, and court proceedings
  • Managing assigned matters and working collaboratively with the litigation team

Legal Billing Specialist

Lashly & Baer, P.C. is seeking an experienced Legal Billing Specialist to take ownership of the firm’s billing process for approximately 50 attorneys. This is a hands-on position for someone who understands the details of legal billing and can also identify opportunities to improve and streamline our processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the firm’s monthly billing process, including reviewing time and expenses, editing prebills, and preparing and finalizing client invoices.
  • Review and resolve billing issues, discrepancies, and attorney questions.
  • Provide finalized bills and necessary information to the firm’s e-Billing Specialist for submission through electronic billing systems.
  • Work closely with attorneys and the Accounting Department to ensure accurate and timely billing.
  • Maintain and update client billing and budget information.
  • Assist with accounts receivable and other billing-related functions.
  • Evaluate current billing processes, identify inefficiencies, and implement practical solutions to improve workflow and accuracy.
  • Develop and maintain consistent billing procedures and best practices.
  • Serve as a resource to attorneys and staff regarding billing questions and requirements.
  • Utilize Coyote Analytics (SurePoint) as the firm’s billing platform.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least 3 years of legal billing experience, preferably in a midsized or large law firm.
  • Strong knowledge of legal billing processes and law firm accounting practices.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach with the ability to identify problems and develop practical solutions.
  • Strong technical skills and an interest in improving systems and processes.
  • Law firm accounting or accounts receivable experience is a plus.
  • Coyote Analytics/SurePoint experience is preferred but not required.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll be working directly with business clients on the kinds of issues that come up every day such as entity formation, purchases and sales of businesses, drafting and negotiation vendor contracts, employment contracts, real estate leases and equipment leases, legally sound decisions. We develop strategy, draft documents, and document every stage of the business process. We represent all types of business owners in Missouri and Illinois, including banks, Agri-lenders, family farms, professionals, and other owner-operated businesses.

Lashly & Baer’s corporate practice involves representing health care providers and other professionals, so if you have experience with (or interest in learning) health care issues such as the Anti-Kickback Statute, the Stark Law, Federal reimbursement law, telehealth, and state licensing law, that’s a plus. This is a hands-on role where you’ll be working directly with public and private sector employers on the kinds of issues that come up every day such as employee discipline, workplace policies, compliance questions, and helping employers make practical, legally sound decisions. You’ll draft and review employment-related agreements, revise employee policies, help navigate tricky personnel situations, and be a regular point of contact for clients who rely on us for straightforward, timely advice.

A big part of our practice involves representing public-sector clients, so if you have experience with (or interest in learning) public employment issues, open meetings, or working with governmental bodies, that’s a plus. We also assist our clients with public sector bargaining, so any experience with (or interest in learning) public sector labor negotiations is also a plus.
