Equal
Employment Opportunity
Lashly &
Baer is an equal opportunity employer. We do not
discriminate in any aspect of our employment practices
against any qualified applicant or employee on account of
race, color, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation,
national origin, age, disability, marital status, veteran
status, or any other characteristic protected by law. All
employment decisions are made on the basis of
qualifications, performance and/or other legitimate
non-discriminatory factors.
We
believe that our firm and our clients benefit from our
diversity. We have employed African-American lawyers since
1971. We were the first major St. Louis law firm to hire a
minority lawyer, we were among the first St. Louis law
firms to participate in the minority law clerk program
sponsored by the local law schools, and we annually
sponsor an intern from the St. Louis Public Schools. We
are committed to increasing the diversity of our firm, and
thus, we actively welcome people of varying backgrounds,
cultural influences and experience, who have the ability
and desire to assist us in rendering excellent client
service.
Lashly &
Baer has a relationship with several minority-owned law
firms. We have entered into joint counsel agreements with
minority-owned firms on legal services performed for the
Bi-State Development Agency, the Resolution Trust
Corporation, and Historic Restoration, Inc. (the
developers of the Convention Center Headquarters Hotel).
At
present, more than a third of our attorneys are female and
more than a third of the members of the Firm are women.
Our female members participate as members of the Board of
Directors and as practice group chairs.
Summer Associate Program
The
summer associate program at Lashly & Baer, P.C. is
designed to provide law students with challenging legal
projects and an introduction to private law practice.
Lashly & Baer attorneys provide legal services in health
care, professional malpractice, commercial litigation,
employment, school law, municipal government, corporate,
banking, real estate, securities, tax and estate planning
areas. Summer associates at Lashly & Baer may expect to
work on substantive projects in many of these practice
areas.
The
summer associate experience at Lashly & Baer provides law
students with an opportunity to apply their legal skills
to real legal issues. We try to provide our summer
associates with as much responsibility as possible, while
also providing an educational opportunity. Lashly & Baer's
summer associates may gain practical experience in
document preparation and review, litigation skills, client
counseling, research and writing. Each summer associate
will work on numerous substantive projects during the 10
week term of June 1 to August 15. In addition, Lashly &
Baer encourages its summer associates to observe attorneys
in trial, at depositions, in mediation and negotiation
sessions, during client counseling and in transactional
closings. We firmly believe that having an opportunity to
observe experienced attorneys is one of the most valuable
benefits of our summer associate program.
Lashly &
Baer seeks highly motivated individuals who have proven
themselves academically. Our summer associates are
generally ranked in the top quarter of their law school
class and are on the staff of their school's law journal.
Many Lashly & Baer summer associates have participated in
moot court, negotiation and mock trial competitions, and
student bar association activities. In addition to
academic achievements, Lashly & Baer looks for individuals
who are active in the community and in pro bono
activities.
We look
for individuals who share our desire to be engaged in the
challenging and honorable practice of law and who strive
to make a difference in our community.
Lashly &
Baer interviews second year law students in the fall of
each year for the following Summer. Interviews are
conducted on the campuses of Washington University, Saint
Louis University, and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
In addition, Lashly & Baer interviews law students from
other law schools during each fall for the summer
associate program. Interested law students should contact
their placement director or contact James C. Hetlage at
Lashly & Baer at 314-621-2939 or e-mail at
jhetlage@lashlybaer.com.
